Leopard

Are you a leopard person? Love it? Hate it? Not really sure about it?  I will admit that I was NOT a leopard gal.  The only leopard I had in my closet was a belt and a cute pair of loafers I picked up last year. Even those I only wear occasionally in the fall/winter months in SoCal.  That is until now. Stella & Dot recently came out with a reversible leopard and black bomber jacket and I have to say I am now a leopard convert!  It’s comfy, cute, and versatile. When I say versatile I mean that you can wear the jacket with the leopard side out or the black side out. It truly is versatile but here is really why I love it! The versatility means that you can wear it with more items in your closet! The possibilities are endless!  What could you wear it with you ask?  Are you a casual gal who…

Sleeves or No Sleeves?

Are you a sleeves gal or a no sleeves gal? My whole life my mom has been a sleeves gal. She has always been self conscious about her arms and insists on wearing sweaters or jackets to cover up her arms. In fact, she is close to 80 and she still covers up. I on the other hand am a no sleeves gal. More often than not I have hot flashes so no sleeves keeps me cool. Depending on the day, I may have issues with my stomach and the muffin top when wearing my jeans or skirt but mostly I have come to be grateful for my body and all that it’s done for me. Also, I am at an age when I usually don’t care what others think. If I like it and love it I am wearing it.  Believe me, I get it. I have a few clients that insist on having top with sleeves…

Affordable Fashion

What is affordable Fashion? Affordable is a relative term so my definition of affordable is an accessory or piece of clothing that you find at a “reasonable" price, can be worn during several seasons and can be easily mixed and matched with various other pieces to make new outfits.  Can you find a piece at $100, $200 or more and call it affordable? The answer is yes. I like to think of affordable in terms of wears. What does that mean? Ask yourself before you purchase something…How often am I going to wear this?  Let’s say you found an item on sale at $20 or $50 (or more) and purchased it because it was on sale and/or a “steal!!”  But…you never wore it or only wore it once. I wouldn’t consider that affordable because if you never wore it you wasted your money.   So often people buy things because they were on sale or were a great…

Accessories

Do you have a favorite accessory? A necklace perhaps? Maybe a pair of statement earrings? Are you a scarf gal? Maybe you like to make a statement with a purse or a pair of shoes? Do you have patterned belts? Accessories can change the look of an outfit from casual to professional or vice versa. There are so many great options and you can pick and choose from and you can use more than one! It’s an easy way to elevate an outfit or make it more casual. For example, if you wear a casual top, and a denim skirt you can choose to wear it with sneakers for a more casual look or a pair of heels for a dressier style. Add a delicate necklace or a statement necklace and you could have two different looks.   Not sure where to start? Try a pop of color with a pair of statement earrings, a scarf, or bag. …

Mixing Old & New

I alway say you don’t have to spend a lot of money on clothes or jewelry to look good. One way to do this is to mix in older items with newer items.  For example, today I wore an OLD cardigan with a new tank. I purchased the cardigan about 3 years ago and while I paid over $100 for it if you were to average out the price per wear it would come out to a few dollars (per wear).   Even though an item may be old, when you have a high quality piece that stands the test of time you can mix and match it with newer and less expensive pieces and no one will know the difference. When you add bling to the look you also shift the attention from the clothes to the jewelry.  Today I paired a basic inexpensive black tank top and a pair of jeans with the “old” cardigan. I…

Capsule Wardrobe

This past weekend I had less than 30 minutes to pack for an unexpected weekend in the Bay Area and I didn’t know exactly what I needed to pack for. I knew I would be going out to dinner and maybe a visiting with friends and family but other than that I had no clue. It turns out it was way easier to pack than even I realized. I have the essential pieces of a capsule wardrobe so most of what I have mixes and matches into several different outfits and looks. I also have pieces that fit the body I have now (not my dream body) so I quickly pulled a jacket, a cardigan, a pair of jeans, 2 tops, a skirt, 2 pairs of shoes (casual and heels), and my jewels. Those 8 pieces carried me through the weekend of events and meals and I felt good and looked good. The essentials of a capsule wardrobe…

Basics…the White Button Down

What are basics? I consider basics as pieces that you can mix and match with multiple pieces in your wardrobe. One of my favorites is a white button down shirt. I recently found one on sale at the GAP and I instantly added it to my cart. I wasn’t sure of the quality or texture but I figured I would give it a try (especially since it was on sale on sale)!!  Basics are essential to a capsule wardrobe which make it quicker and easier to get dressed. I usually have a basic white top in my rotation but I wasn't having much luck finding a new one after I wore out the last one (until now). It turns out the white button down top from the GAP was perfect! It fit well, is light weight but not see through and it is the perfect length for my 5ft. 4in body. In the end it turned out to…

Tops with a Print or a Pattern

When was the last time you went out of your comfort zone with your style? Have you tried wearing a top with print or a pattern? For years I didn’t wear any tops with a print or pattern because I was told that they weren't flattering on “big” gals. Well you know what?! I don’t believe that any more and NOW I know better!  Tops with a print or pattern can look great on all shapes and sizes! I believe they're actually quite amazing because they have more than one color or focal point making them easier to mix and match with other pieces in your wardrobe. Plus, depending on the pattern you can draw the eye towards your best asset and/or away from an area you’re not comfortable with.  Not sure where to start?? Start with a small print that has a base color that is flattering on you. If you pick a print with multiple colors,…

How Do You Know When To Spend More?

How do you know when to spend more on a quality piece? It’s a really good idea to ask yourself a few questions before you decide to invest in a quality piece.  Is it good quality?Do I love it?Can I wear it year round? Does it fit properly? Can I mix and match it with pieces I already own?Is it a neutral color? If you can answer yes to three or more of these questions then this is a piece that you could be wearing year after year and it’s worth the investment.  YOU are worth it! YOU are allowed to look good & feel good!YOU are allowed to spend money on yourself! I say it’s an investment because it’s a piece you will be wearing over and over again. If you divide the total price by the number of times you will likely wear it it makes it very worthwhile. This is a piece that you can keep in your…
